LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 offers the whole online community experience through the NXT 2.0 portal that offers further software, building instruction and other downloads. I’d love to see how high school students build. When I was in a class building and programming with a group of highly engaged and interested students they quickly realised they could change the sounds, colours, speed and distance with some simple clicks of the mouse – and these students were between 7-10 years. In many ways the Mindstorms NXT 2.0 programming environment is my children's modern version of that activity. I remember typing out the simple BASIC language programming into my Commodore 64 as a kid and saving the small programs that scrolled my name down the screen or allowed me to play hangman on tape. Or, you can build any of the four robot designs on offer and then play around with the programming of the existing build. Of course you can design and build the standard robots on offer, but you can also build whatever other contraption takes your fancy and try to work out how to program it.
The reason is the breadth of educational value that Mindstorms NXT 2.0 offers.
